But why Digital Marketing (Online Marketing) and why is it so important all of a sudden. Is it for real or just another buzzword? 

Or to come to a more basic question, what is digital marketing? And why digital marketing? Why it matters? 

To understand what is digital marketing or online marketing, we need to understand what the traditional channels lack that gave rise to this form of marketing?

Simple! right?

Content marketing

“Content is the king”. 

Don't believe me, then think what are the other ways that you will use to entice your customers to your products or services. Anything that you can think of will be a form of content. 

Will you create a nice video that you can use as an ad for your business or just to give free information that your clients can use? Or, will you design a nice white paper to show that you know your stuff and you understand the trends? Or, will you create a case study that will showcase how you helped one of your clients to reach their goals?

Brochures, Flyers, Infographics, Social media posts, ebooks, blogs (Just like the one you are reading right now), you name it and trust me you will find it under the tree called content.

Content marketing is the art of creating something that is not promotional in nature, but instead educates and inspires. 

Tough but worth it.

Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization is the practice of getting the quantity and quality traffic on your website for free of cost so that your web pages appear at the top of a search engine result for the specific set of keyword terms you know your customers are looking for. 

So, SEO definition has three aspects of traffic that you get on your website
1. Quality of the traffic
2. Quantity of the traffic
3. Organic traffic

Now the question is how to do it?
1 Create content, relevant for people who search for your products and services.
2 Make it easy for people to share and link to it.

Search engine marketing (SEM) 

The practice of promoting your products/services/business using paid adverts that appears on Search Engine page results (SERP).

Most famous ways of accomplishing this is by using Google Adwords which almost all marketers swears by. Following Google is Microsoft with their Bing Ads (Understand them here) and then Yahoo with their Search Ads (Great article by Wordstream on Yahoo search Ads).

The key to SEM is in fact keywords (But do they matter as much as they used to, Read this to find yourself). Understanding and identifying how your customers are conducting their online searches enables you to discover quickly the keywords appearing frequently in their minds when they search what you are selling.


Social Media Marketing (SMM)

What are your customer doing on social media? Watching that cute dog video or posting selfies or are they doing something else too that you ought to know even if you are not interested in what they wore or ate last night in a friend’s wedding party. 

Your customers are actually researching and asking for social proof of your products or services on their social networks. So are you there to answer what they want to know?

The more your content engage your audience, the more likely it is going to be shared. This ultimately leads to them becoming your customer. 

Bonus, they will probably influence their friends to become customers at no additional cost.


Affiliate marketing

One of the oldest form of marketing and that has traversed successfully from the online world to the online world. 

The process has 3 simple steps;
You ask someone to buy a product (the most used way is to ask someone to click on the link you sent or use a coupon you sent.)
The person make the purchase.
You get a commission.


Email marketing

More than 2 decades and Email is still going strong. And trust me when I say it is going to remain that way - Strong.

But to engage your customer through emails- they should be timely, relevant, informative, engaging with a bit of entertainment in it and speaking in the same language your other channels are speaking.


Mobile Marketing

How many times you have checked you mobile phone while reading this article? or are you reading this on your mobile device already? So, if I say mobile marketing is amazingly important, you will definitely going to nod you head in a yes.

But mobile marketing very nuanced as compared to other channels due to the various factors like 
1 Screen size, 
2 Personalization, and
3 Localization 


So, now you might be thinking - “Hmmph, that’s a lot of stuff for a single person to handle and you definitely need a team to do all this. and digital marketing definitely more than Facebook ads and social media blasts. 

But before going overboard with your thinking horses, let me ask you something. What all  channels you need for your business or your brand?
